GUSA Games - UDS Men's Football Team Claims Top Spot in Group 'A'

At the going GUSA games, the UDS men’s football team, who had already qualified for the quarter finals after winning all their first three games, were playing for the bragging rights when they came up against the UCC lads in the final group ‘A’ game.

UDS goalkeeper Mohammed Ganiu saved a penalty and a UCC player kicked the ball against the cross crossbar to send UDS through to the top of the group following a goalless draw after extra time.

UDS’ midfield dynamo, Mohammed Asigri, who had been deployed by the technical team led by the Director of Sports, Mr. Ibrahim Tanko, to play in a more central role, was inches away from opening the scoring in just the second minute when his long-range effort drifted just wide of the target.

Despite plenty of attacking intent from both sides in the first half, chances proved to be difficult to create in the opening 45 minutes.

The number 21 shirted man for UCC came closest for UCC with a powerful strike from 35 yards but he was denied by the post.

The number 21 shirted man had a great opportunity to put UCC ahead early in the dying embers of the 2nd period but the forward somehow managed to scoop his shot over the crossbar from 12 yards out.

UDS’ Mohammed Sherif, who came on as a substitute, missed a chance in the closing stages of the game when he shot wide from inside the box.

Penalties were needed to split the two teams, and Mohammed Ganiu proved to be the hero for Ghana as he denied UCC scoring opportunities, to help his side to a 5-4 win in the shootout to set up a quarterfinal with UMAT.
