New UDS Governing Council Conducts Familiarization Tour of Campuses

Ahead of its 102nd meeting, of the newly constituted Governing Council of the University for Development Studies, the Council undertook a familiarization tour of the various campuses and facilities belonging the University.

The tour commenced at the Nyankpala campus, where the Principal of Nyankpala Campus Prof. Muniru Iddrisu warmly welcomed the council members. Prof. Iddrisu recounted the university's beginning at Nyankpala a little over three decades ago and used the opportunity to provide an overview of the diverse courses offered at the Nyankpala campus. Thereafter, the Registrar Mr. Nurudeen Issah Abubakar introduced the new council members to the Principal and staff at the Nyankpala campus.

The Members of the Council proceeded to inspect the Silver Jubilee Building, a project initiated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2018. Despite awaiting commissioning, a section of the building is already being utilized for lectures. The members of the Council were impressed with the quality of worker done by the contractors.

Next, the Council Members inspected the site of a collapsed building which was under construction on the City Campus.  The building collapsed on the night of Saturday, May 6, 2023, after a heavy downpour. The collapsed building was intended to serve as offices and lecture halls upon completion.

The members of the Council them proceeded to the Gbanyamli site, where an 18-acre plot of land has been acquired and walled off to prevent encroachment. Plans are underway to move the University's School of Business and the proposed Faculty of Law at the Gbanyamli Campus upon development.

At the Tamale Campus, the member undertook a comprehensive inspection of ongoing and completed projects. These included the residential facilities which has been converted into offices for the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research (IIR) the Office of the Dean of Students, the Drylands Research Institute among others. They also inspected the progress on the ICT complex construction, and sites of the construction of the twin lecture theatres, Nursing and Midwifery lecture halls, and an auditorium.

The tour provided the Members of the Council with an overview of the university's infrastructural development and plans for future expansion to help achieve the university's aim of become a world class university.
