RE - Brilliant Tamale Girl With 6- A’S in WASSCE Rejected Twice by UDS

06/12/2022

The attention of the University for Development Studies has been drawn to a story about one Seidu Gloria Wunsani who is said to have obtained 6 -A’s in the WASSCE. The story, which has been circulating on some media platforms for some time now, alleges that Ms. Seidu Gloria Wunsani applied twice to the University for Development Studies, UDS, to accomplish her dream of becoming a doctor or aerospace engineer, but was rejected.

The claims made in the story are incorrect and do not in any way represent the facts and state of affairs, especially regarding admissions into the UDS School of Medicine.

To begin with, the said Seidu Gloria Wunsani first applied to the UDS School of Medicine for admission for the 2021/2022 academic year with aggregate 8. That same year, the number of applicants to the UDS School of Medicine, who had applied with better aggregate scores or same aggregate score as the lady in question, far exceeded the number of first year students that the School of Medicine could conveniently admit.

Moreover, she applied as an “awaiting results” applicant in 2021, a time that many of the other applicants who had already applied with their 2020 WASSCE results had gained aggregate 6 or better aggregate scores. In other words, other applicants with same or better aggregate scores as Ms. Seidu Gloria Wunsani could not be admitted to the UDS School of Medicine.

Secondly, UDS does not run any courses in Aerospace Engineering. It is therefore false to even claim that she applied to UDS to pursue such a course and was rejected.

Thirdly, the story alleges that Ms. Seidu Gloria Wunsani “has been rejected twice” by UDS. If she applied for the first time in the 2021/2022 academic year, the second time would be the 2022/2023 academic year. As of the date of this press release, and at the time the story made those allegations, the UDS School of Medicine had not made any admissions yet. Therefore, the claim that she had been rejected a second time is a lie.

Notice must also be made of the fact that in considering admissions to Schools of Medicine in Public Universities in Ghana, an applicant’s score in Social Studies does not form part of the criteria used for grading. Therefore, even though Ms. Seidu Gloria Wunsani, scored an “A” in Social Studies, it does not form part of her grading for admission to the School of Medicine.

The University for Development Studies (UDS), disassociates itself from the claims in the story which we find mischievous and intended to mislead the public and harm the reputation of the University.  The public is advised to treat the contents of the story with the contempt it deserves.
