The School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS) of the University for Development Studies (UDS) has organized a two-day workshop on Professional Development in Teaching and Assessment for lecturers at the UDS Guest House on the Tamale Campus. The aim of the two-day professional workshop was to enhance the capacity of the lecturers in the field of pedagogy. Experienced resource persons from the field of academia were invited to facilitate the workshop.

The workshop also focused on issues in significant areas of teaching such as preparation towards teaching, principles of quality teaching and effective lesson delivery, supervision of project work, dissertation and thesis, purposes and principles of assessment in higher education, a training on student management, among others.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Seidu Al-hassan, commended the organizers for a well-planned exercise. Whiles adding that the content of the workshop was of great significance to the University, Prof. Seidu spent some time to eulogize the experienced facilitators, one of whom, dr. Albert Dare, was his lecturer in his days as a student.

He encouraged the lecturers to strive to become the best in their fields, and to challenge students during the teaching process. He appealed to the organizers to make the training a regular feature on the school’s calendar, and to make it open to a larger audience.

The Former Director of the Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, at the University of Cape Coast, UCC, and Former Vice Rector, Spiritan University College, Ejisu, Dr. Albert L. Dare, advised the lecturers to work hard to ensure that their students attain great heights. Using his former student, Prof Seidu as an example, Dr. Dare said, he feels very proud that he played a part in making the Vice-Chancellor who he is today.

Dr. Dare added that the students they teach now are a generation of learners who are different from their generation, hence, lecturers should take advantage of the explosion of knowledge in recent times and work towards equipping themselves with effective strategies of teaching in order to ensure successful results.

Also in attendance were the Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, Dr. Humphrey Garti, the Faculty Officer and Senior Assistant Register at the School of Allied Health Sciences, Alhaji Bawah Abdullah Kassim, and the Former Head of Department of Education and Psychology, UCC, Professor Y.K.A. Etsey.
