UDS School Of Medicine (SoM) Holds Annual White Coat Ceremony For Transitioning Clinical Students

The School of Medicine, one of UDS’ prestigious Schools held its annual White Coat Ceremony at the University’s multipurpose auditorium for its class of 2025 batch of students. The white coat ceremony is an annual ceremony held by the School of Medicine to induct its fourth-year students into the clinical school, to grant them the honor of being robed by practicing medical doctors.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies, Professor Seidu Alhassan was the guest of honour. He expressed delight at the successes chalked up by the School of Medicine in the last 25 years.

Prof Seidu congratulated the students on their journey and advised them to uphold the University’s code of conduct as well as that of the Ghana Health Service. While cautioning them against unethical behaviors while at their duty posts, he urged them to be confident and have patience when dealing with their patients.

The Head of the Department of Health Professions Education and Innovative Learning, Prof.. Victor Mogre, gave a brief history of the SoM. He said the SoM was established in 1996 on the Nyankpala Campus of the University. However, students alternated between the University of Ghana, Legon, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, for their clinical training. Prof. Mogre added that, the SoM commenced internal training of clinical students in 2008, and has since trained over a thousand doctors who are working within and outside of the country.

The event had in attendance the Principal of the Nyankpala Campus, Professor George Nyarko, the Dean of the School of Medicine, Professor Steven Tabiri, the Vice Dean, Professor Gideon Helegbe, the Medical Students Association (MSA) President, Mr. Mustapha Zakaria and other staff and students of the School of Medicine.

The MSA President, Mr. Mustapha Zakaria, congratulated the students on their journey and urged them to keep striving to be great doctors, not only to the University and the School, but most especially to their patients and the Nation at large. He also announced that the School of Medicine is twenty-fives years old this year, and activities for the celebration will be announced in due time.
