The West Africa Centre for Sustainable Rural Transformation (WAC-SRT) organized a 2-day roundtable conference on Sustainable Smallholder Irrigation Innovation and Transfer (SSIIT) in West Africa at the University for Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana, from 24th to 25th August 2022.
The roundtable conference, involving 25 participants from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Germany and Niger, was meant to prepare a research agenda on renewable-energy-powered smallholder irrigation systems by collecting experiences and knowledge shared by the partner institutions of WAC-SRT and WASCAL. Based on a review of project reports, scientific publications, policy papers and theses that have been produced at partner institutions, the discussions addressed economic and social aspects of sustainable smallholder irrigation. This exchange, carried out with representatives of smallholder farmers, NGOs, universities, government sectors, development organizations, business and industry, will further a future research, capacity building and innovation transfer strategy that will be developed with participation of these same stakeholders, in a transdisciplinary manner.
