Background

Mohammed Mujitaba Dawuda (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Horticulture. He obtained his BSc. Agriculture degree from the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana in 2001 and MSc. in Vegetable Crop Production (Olericulture) from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana in 2010. He holds a PhD in vegetable science (Crop Physiology option) which was obtained from the College of Horticulture, Gansu Agriculture University, China in 2020. He was appointed as Assistant Lecturer in the Horticulture Department, UDS in 2013 and was promoted to the position of a Lecturer in 2015. Prior to joining the UDS in 2013, he had worked for more than 10 years as a Senior/Principal Technician in the Crop and Soil Science Department of the University of Education, Winneba. In UDS, he served as the Departmental Coordinator for the Third Trimester Field Practical Programme (2013-2016). He also serverd as the Faculty Coordiinator for Academic Planning and Quality Assurance (2022-2023). He is currently serving as the Departmental Coordinator for postgraduate programmes as well as the Examinations Officer, Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Sciences. He has been teaching undergraduate courses including Agricultural Botany, Introduction to Vegetable Crop Production, Principles of Horticulture and Vegetable Crop Production. He also teaches some postgraduate courses including Advances in Vegetable Crop Production and Marketing and Plant Growth Regulators. Dr. Dawuda has been supervising both undergraduate and postgraduate project research. He has conducted extensive research on the impact of agronomic practices (soil amendments, variety, plant spacing) on the growth, yield and quality of indigenous and exotic vegetable crops. He has also conducted studies on understanding the role of exogenous hormones (ABA) in regulating heavy metal stress coping mechanisms in lettuce. Currently, he conducts research studies towards developing appropriate agronomic strategies for increased yield and quality of vegetable crops under field and/or in greenhouse conditions. Dr. Dawuda has published more than 60 papers in peer reviewed journals and he also serves as a reviewer to a number of local and international journals including Ghana Journal of Horticulture, UDS International Journal of Development, UDS Journal of Science, Agriculture and Technology, Pakistani Journal of Botany and Peer J. Dr. Dawuda is a member of the Ghana Science Association (GSA), University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and member of Council to the Ghana Institute of Horticulturists (GhIH), currently serving as the Honorary National Secretary to the GhIH and the Ag. Secretary to northern zonal branch of the GhIH. Dr. Dawuda has since 2015 been representing UDS at the Research and Extension Liason Committee (RELC) meetings involving the Directorate of Agriculture, SARI, UDS, farmers and NGOs in the Upper East Region of Ghana. He has facilitated a number of training for vegetable farmers and also ran some field demonstrations on improved agronomic practices/root-knot nematodes management in vegetable crop production in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
